Transforming Health Through Community

When we think about what shapes our health, we often point to things like nutrition, exercise, or genetics. But the neighborhood we call home plays a huge role, too. Communities without access to fresh food, safe streets and sidewalks, quality housing, or green space make it harder for residents to thrive, and they face higher risks of health problems, which can even shorten life expectancy.

Well-being flourishes when local institutions and public systems work effectively—when the schools serve children well, when healthcare is accessible and affordable, and when there are no barriers preventing anyone from fully participating in community life.

A Holistic Approach to Wellness

Our approach to community wellness has always been rooted in relationships. Strong connections among neighbors, youth, families, and community leaders lay the foundation for health. We strengthen that foundation through coordinated initiatives that support the physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being of every resident. These efforts will include a wide range of programs, from exercise and access to healthy food to trauma-informed therapy, rhythm, music, dance, health education, and prenatal support, as FCS continues to expand its holistic approach.

This integrated model of wellness touches all areas of our work:

  • Youth Development: Through programs like the South Atlanta Youth Group, we nurture the next generation of community leaders. Youth build confidence, creativity, and physical health through mentorship, fitness, and creative expression—all while developing emotional resilience and belonging.
  • Community Engagement: From bike clubs to health workshops, neighborhood celebrations, and mental wellness gatherings, we help foster spaces where residents connect, heal, and grow together.
  • Housing & Economic Vitality: Stable homes and thriving local businesses are integral to wellness. Our economic development efforts address food access and nutrition through places like Carver Market, while our housing work ensures families have a healthy foundation to build upon.
  • Education: Through our ongoing efforts to expand access to affordable, high-quality early learning opportunities for families, we are creating foundational environments that nurture healthy development from a child’s earliest days.

We’re working to ensure that every aspect of wellness is within reach for South Atlanta neighbors.

Building an Ecosystem of Care

Partnerships remain at the heart of this work. By collaborating with healthcare providers, schools, and wellness-focused organizations, we’re creating comprehensive strategies that address both individual and community-level health outcomes.

Neighbor voice and community needs determine how we lead and which stakeholders we seek to partner with, strategically balancing when we act as a direct services provider and when we collaborate with partners to implement programs or initiatives. Earlier this year, we launched a partnership with Grady Health to bring the Mobile Health Center to Historic South Atlanta and Thomasville Heights on a monthly basis, making wellness more accessible than ever.

We’re proud to continue growing this vision, one grounded in belonging, healing, and shared strength. Together, we’re not just talking about wellness. We’re living it.
