Anniversaries invite us to reflect on legacy, and few legacies at FCS are as impactful and enduring as Shell Stafford’s. Her 39 years of service have left an indelible mark on our organization, making her an essential part of the story we tell as we celebrate 25 years in South Atlanta.
Shell’s journey with FCS began long before we moved to South Atlanta. Over the years, she’s worn many hats—administration, accounting, resident services—and now serves as our Housing Services Manager. In every role, she has brought wisdom, compassion, and a deep sense of purpose that has fueled her longevity. “The thing that has kept me going was knowing that the work I do is truly Kingdom-driven,” reflects Shell. “It touches people’s lives. I get to witness change and see how that change makes a difference to those we serve.”
Shell’s work is about far more than paperwork or keys exchanged. It’s about hope realized and lives transformed. “When a young family is seeking rental housing for the first time, and we are able to place them in a unit, they get so excited. It brings me joy every time,” she says. And perhaps most powerfully, she shares: “When I call a homeowner and let them know they only have a few more mortgage payments left, they beam with pride.”
Homeownership has always been more than a goal for Shell—it’s a way of life. “Housing is the number one component that helps stabilize families and neighborhoods,” she explains. “By providing housing, we provide security, pride, and a sense of worth to those who may not otherwise have it.”
Last year, Shell reached a powerful milestone of her own: she paid off her mortgage and now owns her home outright. It’s a personal triumph that mirrors the victories she’s helped so many neighbors achieve.
“I want every person who comes through our doors to know that there’s a path for them,” Shell says. “Everyone we work with is in some stage of the process towards acquiring their own home, whether renting or preparing to buy, I try to explain what the next step is for them to achieve their goal.”
If you know Shell, you know she doesn’t seek the spotlight. But as we celebrate this anniversary, it’s only right to honor the faithfulness she has shown through nearly four decades of service. Shell is more than our longest-serving staff member; she embodies the best of our work here in Historic South Atlanta and shows us all what it means to be a good neighbor.
“I hear longevity is a rare trait,” she says with a smile. “I’m really proud to have been here as long as I have. I hope to continue this awesome work with all these incredible people.”
