Investing in Dreams

What does it take to turn an idea into a thriving business—and a neighborhood into a place of opportunity?

Programs like Start:ME, in partnership with Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, are helping answer that question across Atlanta. Specifically on the Southside, our cohort of 20 entrepreneurs has spent the past few months gaining skills, connections, and support to bring their business ideas to life.

Playing a key role in that growth are mentors like Joi Jackson, Development Director at FCS, who is walking alongside entrepreneurs as they build not only businesses, but confidence.

A Full Circle Moment

For Joi, this work is deeply personal. She first connected with Start:ME in 2015 while working with the East Lake Foundation, helping launch and coordinate a cohort.

Now, years later, she’s returned as a mentor, bringing both her professional experience and her perspective as a former entrepreneur.

“Returning now as a mentor feels like coming full circle,” she shared. “It’s an opportunity to help others build the confidence and skills to pursue their dreams.”

As an Atlanta native, Joi is especially passionate about supporting small and minority-owned businesses that reflect and strengthen the city she calls home.

Confidence That Changes Everything

While business plans and financial tools are key parts of the program, Joi says the most powerful transformation she sees is internal.

“The most rewarding part is watching people grow in confidence,” she said. “Many entrepreneurs enter the program unsure of themselves, and by the end, they’re proudly sharing their vision. Seeing someone discover their voice and believe in their potential is incredibly powerful.”

That shift—from uncertainty to ownership—can be the difference between an idea staying on paper and becoming something real.

Strengthening Communities Through Small Business

The impact of Start:ME extends far beyond individual entrepreneurs. By equipping people with the tools and support to launch and grow businesses, the program contributes to stronger, more vibrant neighborhoods.

Emory’s research has shown that communities with more small businesses tend to flourish, and Start:ME is helping close gaps by investing directly in local talent and ideas.

This is where Joi sees a natural connection to her work at FCS.

“At FCS, we focus on holistic community development, and small businesses are a key part of that,” she explained. “Mentoring entrepreneurs gives me a firsthand view of their creativity, determination, and challenges.”

That perspective not only shapes her mentoring, but it also helps her better tell the story of why programs like Start:ME matter.

An Invitation to Get Involved

For those considering stepping into a mentor role, Joi’s message is simple:

“Do it.”

“Mentoring in Start:ME is an opportunity to walk alongside someone as they pursue their vision. You’ll share your experience, but you’ll also be inspired by the courage and determination of the entrepreneurs you’re supporting.”

As the Start:ME Southside cohort continues its journey, one thing is clear: when entrepreneurs are supported, confidence grows, businesses take shape, and communities are strengthened.

And with mentors like Joi walking alongside them, that impact only continues to multiply.
